Childs Creek Farm, a Permaculture Farmstead

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 1:45pm

Childs Creek Farm, a permaculture farmstead, is in process of changing from a more traditional farm to a permaculture designed environment. We are a budding intentional community of five adults with part-time and seasonal permaculture students, family and interns. Our intention is to co-create and share the bounty of living close to the land. Goals include:

  • Being a leading example of sustainable living in beauty and diversity.
  • Sharing abundance in classes, seminar workshops on permaculture practices, renewable energy, natural building, organic and native plant gardening, cooking, yoga, art and more.

As an evolving co-generating culturally creative group we find that every season brings energy of change and positive development in concert with natural processes which is the essence of permaculture design.

Once fallow, pastureland and wetland along Childs Creek, has become an emerging and diverse permaculture forest. Childs Creek Farm permaculture planned food forest in the community area above the flood zone, provides abundant foraging. The original century plus old Childs Creek Farmstead has the farm cottage and barn remaining. We have added additional shelters, a community studio and library, and the recycled and saved “Sunshower” house (utilizing green and renewable features for comfortable yet low impact living).

Over the years Childs Creek Farm has raised sheep, pigs, turkeys, rabbits, chickens, and ducks while finding the native plantings attracting an ever-growing abundance of migrant birds and raptors. Avid birders and naturalists at Childs Creek Farm we feel strongly that many hands make light work and permaculture principles well applied in community create joyful and delightful sustainable living.

Come join us for a Sunday afternoon potluck or a season of sharing skills and talents at Childs Creek Farmstead!!!

Permaculture and Bio-Dynamics

Monday, March 29th, 2010 1:32am

Permaculture & Bio-dynamics: A discussion at Inspiration Farm with Brian and Rosie and two residents of Childs Creek Farm: Food forest guilds, a key feature of permaculture were the hands-on topic of the day. Brian utilizes the new found synergy of Bio-Dynamics, he gleans the best from Permaculture principles(physical) combining them with the metaphysical aspects of Bio-dynamics. Together these two ways move the farm more quickly toward a successful unified self-sustainable whole organism.
Cindy from Childs Creek Farm asked about the differences and similarities between the two schools of thought regarding Permaculture and Bio-Dynamics. Both are whole systems approaches that consider the interconnections of all parts of a whole.

Childs Creek Farm has primarily been designed with Permaculture in mind. Humans and natural systems work closely together in cooperation. Permaculture is informed by natural cycles as well as their integration with agricultural and biological sciences. Bio-dynamics is considered to be “homeopathics for the earth”, yet consciously connects to the cosmos and universal truths. Preparations are made that help create a vortex improving the workings of the system.

Permaculture

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 5:54pm

Permaculture is a relationship where humans ally with nature to study the natural patterns, cycles and diversities of natural life.

In permaculture we distill the principles and concepts that frame the big picture in total from soil microbes to global weather patterns.
